So we've started down the slippery slope that is spoon feeding. When I first started, Shannon would scream and scream because she was hungry and what the hell was I trying to do with that spoon?
She no longer screams, but I'm getting frustrated because she keeps pushing it out with her tongue, no matter what the consistency. Am I doing something wrong or is this part of it and I just have to be patient until she figures it out?
Recent-ish advice would be appreciated, since (according to my mother) it seems that I was already feeding myself at 6 months whilst standing on my head...:P

Date: 2005-05-24 02:49 am (UTC)Start with small amounts of rice cereal mixed with whatever you've been feeding her previously. The taste will be familiar but the method is the new thing. (I was told that rice is the least likely to have food allergies). Thicken this over time until it's like runny oatmeal (ricemeal?)
If she pushes it out, scrape it back towards her mouth. Don't worry so much about quantity as about getting her to try it.
If you've been trying this with a high chair, try holding her in your lap a little more vertical than you would for a "normal" feeding. She associates this position with food.

Date: 2005-05-24 03:08 am (UTC)Wait until she figures out how to stuff her hands into her mouth to PUSH the food in! Just keep scraping the food off her chin and putting it back into her mouth... she'll absorb it by osmosis if nothing else.
(it IS hard to figure out how to use the tongue to PULL food into the back of the mouth to swallow. Keep trying, she'll get it!)
(oh, and take tons of pictures with her with food all over her face. She'll love it at her wedding. Honest.)
