Holy fuck, I am TIRED.
Granted, I did this to myself, staying up waaaaay too late to watch the Gold Medal Olympic Women's Hockey game, but oh, what a game! It was the classic pairing of Canada versus the USA and it was a grudge match. Canada won 3-2 (and thus, the gold medal) and played really hard. The American team also played really hard, but not quite hard enough to beat their opponents.
Desbiens, Canada's goalie, should get some sort of MVP award. The US team Do Not Like Her and started to get pissy when she kept blocking their goals with seeming ease. Sure, I get that it's fucking frustrating, but that's kind of the goalie's job and shoving her around is only going to get the rest of the Canadian team to close ranks. Which is what happened. And one of the reasons for the gold medal.
The US team also tried the strategy of pulling their goalie (leaving an empty net) for another attacker near the end of the third period. They did the same thing during the quarter final game against Canada. It didn't work then, either. Canada, from the moment their sticks hit the ice, were undefeated throughout their gold medal run.
As for the men's teams... Oy. Both the Canadian and American teams have been eliminated in the quarterfinals. That's it. They're done. It seems that the men can't seem to play worth a damn if they aren't stacked with NHL players. Now, I'm not all that sad to see this result; I did catch some of the US/Canada game during the preliminaries and neither team were at the level of the women. The women's teams played better hockey, fast and unrelenting and fierce. The men, no so much.
