I swapped out the video card that was there for one I had kicking around as I was getting tired of the very noisy fan. Since last night, I've manually stopped the fan 6 times, so enough is enough.

It's definitely a noticeable downgrade (from 128 MB to 32 MB), since scrolling online is no longer smooth, but at least there's no fan to make a horrible grinding noise.

There's something I can try, but I don't know how successful it's going to be, but I think I'm going to wait on that until tomorrow.

If your Plan A doesn't work, I probably have some fairly powerful cards kicking around at work I could spare.

I monkeyed a bit with the fan on the card and it seems to be working fine, but there's no telling if it's going to hold longer than a day or two.

If I did need one, it would have to be AGP, just so you know.

And thanks. :D

Yeah, I couldn't spare my PCIe cards -- we have too many CAD systems that need them. But I have some ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB AGP cards lying around, and the AGP systems are slowly getting passed down from CAD people to ordinary people.

That would be most awesome as nothing I've tried has worked.

The fan noise has gotten so bad that I've pulled the power plug and my system is now half as noisy (!) as it was before.

Usually the fan will be held onto the heatsink fins with wee screws; another of the same type from somebody's scrap bin would likely do the trick -- but if [livejournal.com profile] epi_lj can give you a replacement card, that would be better.

I managed to get the fan off, but the power cable makes things difficult as it's threaded *through* the heat sink, so I'm not sure how feasible a replacing just the fan would be. I'd have to replace the entire heatsink.
